Ingomar Mound Site

Ingomar Mound Site- More than 2,000 years ago, a group of people hauled dirt, basketful by basketfull to create a mound that span an acre on it’s top. It was ramped and is one of three similarly built mound complexes in the southeastern United States.
Ingomar Mound Site, researched by the Smithsonian in the late 1890s and later by Cobb Institute of Mississippi State is now owned by the Archaeological Conservancy.
The Union County Heritage Museum has exhibits related to the first excavation of the mound in the 1890s by the Smithsonian and later in the 1980s by Cobb Institute. Each October the Museum and Cobb Institute opens the site for tours and demonstrations of flint knapping and other activities.
It was once inhabited by the Chickasaw Indians. The site is now owned by the Archaeological Conservancy and tours are given through the conservancy and the Union County Heritage Museum. |
