Museum Madness began June 16 at the Union County Heritage Museum. The annual summer discovery program, co sponsored by the museum, Junior Auxiliary and BNA Bank, will bring programming to enrich and entertain for children entering 3rd, 4th and 5th grades, said Jill Smith, museum director.
Pottery, Music, Origami and Basket Weaving are this year’s topics. Pre-registration is required. Classes are limited to 20 children each.
The first program was Monday, June 16, as Kenny and Cathy Gregory, potters from Broken Vessel Pottery, taught kids what can be done with a Big Blob of Clay. Children were able to experience the creativity of hands-on learning and have a take - home craft.
On Monday June 23, Louis Sacron, music teacher from East Union, will teach Drumming, Rhythm and Percussion. Kids can catch the beat with assorted rhythm instruments and make their own rhythm instrument to take home. They will learn how drums have been used around the world by many cultures.
Monday, June 30, the Craft of Origami will be taught by Yukako Yamada from Croft Institute at the University of Mississippi. Students can have fun with traditional Japanese art of folding paper to make wonderful and creative creatures and toys and to learn about Japanese culture.
The final day of Museum Madness will be Monday, July 7 and a morning of Basket Weaving will be taught by J. D. Jones of Baldwyn, basket maker and Tombigbee Pioneer. Children can learn the age-old art of basket making and carry their creations home.
Each day of Museum Madness will begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon. Refreshments and crafts supplies are included in the cost, which is $10 per day for members of the Historical Society and $13 per day for non-members. Parents can sign up their children for all week and get a free Museum Madness T-shirt or or any of the days.
